Yes, the following tests may be substituted for TASP to meet the initial TASP testing requirement. Minimum passing scores are listed below each test.
- ASSET (paper and pencil)
Math - 38; Reading - 41; Writing - 40; Essay – 6
- COMPASS (computerized test)
Math - 39; Reading - 81; Writing - 59; Essay – 6
- MAPS (paper and pencil)
Math - 613; Reading - 114; Writing - 310; Essay – 6
- ACCUPLACER (computerized test)

Can I be exempt from THEA?
Texas Success Initiatives Exemptions
Students who claim one of the following exemptions are not required to take the Success Initiative assessment test. Students must still meet specific course placement requirements as established by UH acedemic departments. Document
- Score exemptions:
- SAT total of 1070 and verbal 500 and math 500 -- SAT test dates April 1995 and later
- SAT total of 970 and verbal 420 and math 470 -- SAT test dates before April 1995
- ACT composite of 23 and English 19 and math 19. Scores may not be more than 5 years old at the time of exemption.
- TAKS with Mathematics 2200, English Languange Arts 2200, and writing subscoe of 3. Scores may not be more than 3 years old at the time of exemption
- Degree exemption: Students who have graduated with an associate or baccalaureate degree from an accredited Texas public institution of higher education. This exemption does not include Associate of Applied Science degrees.
- Course work exemption (out of state/private school transfer students): transfer students who have successfully completed college-level course work as determined by the University of Houston.
- Non-degree seeking exemption: students who wish to take courses for personal enrichment but are not pursuing an undergraduate degree.
- Military service exemption: students serving on active duty as a member of the US Armed Forces, the Texas National Guard, or as a member of a reserve component of the US Armed Forces and have been serving for at least 3 years preceding enrollment.
- Prior military service exemption: students who on or after August 1, 1990, were honorably discharged, retired, or released from active duty as a member of the US Armed Forces, the Texas National Guard, or service as a member of a reserve component of the US Armed Forces.
Documentation of exemption is required; students may be asked to provide test scores, transcripts, military documents, etc., in order to claim exemption. Contact the University Studies Division in room 320 of the Student Service Center 1, or call 713.743.8982.
Can I bring a calculator?
Yes, you may use a four-function, non-programmable calculator (with square root and percent keys). You must bring your own calculators and will not be allowed to share a calculator. Examples of calculators that may NOT be used follow (list is not exhaustive):
- Calculator watches
- Scientific or graphing calculators
- Pocket organizers
- Handheld, laptop, or notebook computers
- Electronic writing or pen-input devices
- Calculators with an alpha-numeric keypad
- Calculators with paper tape
- Calculators that make noise
- Calculators with electric cords
- Business or financial planning calculators
